On a night when the sea is frozen and the wind echoes through the monastery walls like a prayer, a young strangled novice is found among the nuns of Pirita Convent. A strange symbol has been scratched onto her forehead. Some swear they saw a light in the church before her death — a light of no human origin. Others believe that the Devil himself has moved into the newly built monastery.

Apothecary Melchior Wakenstede arrives to investigate — a man who believes not only in the Devil, but in the weakness of humankind. Yet on his first night he senses that here, in this holy place, reason does not reign, but something that feeds on both fear and faith.

When a second nun dies, three great powers collide: the city, the Order, and the monastery, each claiming to represent God.

Melchior is joined by his daughter Agatha, a young woman torn between God and her thirst for knowledge. As she helps her father in the investigation, she comes to realize that the greatest evil may come from those who believe they act in the name of righteousness.

Set in 15th-century Tallinn, Agatha is a historical thriller at the crossroads of faith, conscience, and power — a story of a world where every deed can be either sin or salvation, and where even light itself can deceive.
