1991, the summer of Estonia’s reindependence. Johannes is an 18-year-old withdrawn young man who prefers to spend his days reading and keeping the world at a distance. When his estranged father returns after surgery, unresolved family tensions push Johannes to take a summer job as a night watchman at a remote manor in the small village of Vareda.
At first, the days feel monotonous and uneventful, the village unchanged and indifferent, even as the country beyond it is undergoing historic change. But everything shifts when Johannes crosses paths with the bright Margit and the charismatic Andreas. Through these new relationships, he is drawn into questions of love, mortality, and the boundaries of his own solitude.
Over the course of one transformative summer, Johannes is forced to confront the past he has avoided and to discover a more honest sense of self — realising that the world, and he himself, may not be as black-and-white as he once believed.
